Artemis Fowl - The Eternity Code

The Eternity Code - s.jpg

The Eternity Code is the third book in the middle grade fantasy series - Artemis Fowl. After the events of the previous books, Artemis finds himself ready to leave his life of crime behind, and rejoin his family as a “regular” boy. Before he can do that though, he has one last invention to show off to his rivals - the C Cube. The C Cube is an impressive piece of technology that can do almost anything. The only problem? Artemis isn’t the only one who wants the cube, and the 12 year old criminal mastermind soon finds himself bested by a fellow human genius, John Spiro.

I really liked Jon Spiro as a villain in this book. Up until this point in the series there have not been many human villains, and certainly no one as smart as Artemis, so I liked seeing someone who could finally operated on Artemis’s same level. I also really enjoyed seeing Juliet Butler get to step up and really be part of the action in this book. Seeing Juliet and Holly work together to help Artemis was one of the highlights of this story, for me.

Overall, this installment in the Artemis Fowl series felt much closer to the original book in terms of plot and tone than the sequel (The Arctic Incident) did. This book went back to a must simpler heist type story, and there were not as many moving parts as there were in the previous book. All of my favorite characters were back in some way, although I will say that a few of the fairy characters did take a bit of a back seat in this tale. Unlike both previous books, 99.9% of this story takes place above ground, and we do not get to see much more of the fairy’s Haven City.

The ending of this book will have some serious consequences for the series going forward, so I can’t wait to see what happens next to Artemis, Holly, and their friends.
