The Girl with the Louding Voice

The Girl with the Louding Voice.jpg

The Girl with the Louding Voice is a story of hope, strength, and the importance of finding your voice. Adunni dreams of educating herself to be the kind of person that others listen to, but she lives in a poor village in rural Nigeria, where she’s forced into a marriage for money. At just 14 years old, Adunni does not want to be a wife. Escaping her marriage and her village will set her on a path that if she survives, she might achieve her dream.

When I first started reading this book, it was a shock to the senses. Daré writes in her own voice, so you can actually hear her Nigerian accent. Through her writing, I really felt for Adunni. As a young girl, there are so many horrible things that she experiences. Every time I thought she might be OK, something else would happen. Through all her struggles, Adunni never looses her spirit. She even shows kindness to those who have wronged her. She’s the type of character that everyone can learn something from.

While the ending was a little predictable, it still gave me hope that we can all achieve our dreams, and that no matter what languages we speak, we can all understand each other if we just listen.
